Submission Guidelines and Contest Rules

$2500 Grand Prize / $1500 Audience-Choice Award

You must read and understand the rules prior to registering your band.

BACKGROUND:

The State Theatre is a magnificent 550-seat venue for live music, and there is a ton of great music out there that we can’t wait to hear! Therefore, we are excited to host this inaugural BOTB contest, which will begin online and culminate in a live show in front of a packed audience on Sunday, March 13, 2022 at 7pm.

HOW THIS WILL WORK:

  • Each band will submit a video of themselves playing one original song on or before January 15, 2022.
  • Online voting will take place during the month of February.
  • The Top Eight (8) bands will be invited to compete live at the State Theatre on Sunday, March 13, 2022.
    • Five (5) spots will be determined by the most online likes / votes.
    • Three (3) spots will be determined offline by a panel of judges.
  • $2500 Grand Prize will be awarded based on a panel of judges at the live show on March 13, 2022.
  • $1500 Audience Choice Award will be awarded based on in-person voting at the live show on March 13, 2022.

WHO CAN ENTER?

Any type of musical act, solo or full band, regardless of age, experience, or residence.

HOW TO REGISTER:

  1. Entries should be submitted online via the button at the bottom of this page.
  2. Each entrant will be responsible for sending a video of an original song in the form of a link uploaded to YouTube.
  3. Additional required information includes
    • Name of Band
    • Original Song Title
    • Each Band Member’s Name
    • Main Contact Person
    • Email Address
    • Phone
    • Link to YT Video
  4. All entries must be submitted on or before January 15, 2022 at 11:59pm pacific time.
  5. Entry Fee: $15 Non Refundable.

SONG CRITERIA

Contestants must submit an original song. Cover songs will not be accepted.

VIDEO CRITERIA

  1. In an effort to be fair to all entrants, video submissions must be recorded horizontally on a smartphone without any cuts, professional editing, or sound engineering.
  2. External mics, multi-camera shoots, and special effects are not permitted.
  3. You may overlay text on your submission video that identifies your band name and song title, and you may trim the beginning and ending as needed, but do not submit a polished, professional music video.
  4. Once you have completed your video recording, you will upload directly to YouTube as an “UNLISTED” link and then submitted via the registration form linked below.

ONLINE VOTING:

  1. Voting will be done online at www.thestate.org
  2. Users will be able to vote ONCE.
  3. Online voting will begin on Feb. 1, 2022 and end promptly on Feb. 28, 2022 at 5pm.
  4. Sharing the voting link on social media is strongly encouraged.
  5. The Top Five (5) vote-getters will be invited to perform at the live show on March 13, 2021.
  6. Three (3) bands will be selected by State Theatre Board Members and luminaries in the local music community.
  7. Any digital tampering or actions deemed as “voter fraud” by a performer, relative, friend, or acquaintance of any battling group on behalf of group will result in disqualification for the group.

PRODUCTION NIGHT: TOP 8 BANDS

  1. The top 8 bands selected to appear at the State Theatre BOTB Live Show on March 13th will perform TWO (2) songs for their set: the original song that was submitted for online voting AND one additional song (cover or original) chosen by the band.
  2. All bands and equipment must arrive at The State Theatre no later than 5:30pm (Show starts at 7pm). During this time, bands will be able to sound check and test the on-stage equipment.
  3. Order of band performances will be determined backstage by a random drawing on the evening of the show. Any band not present by 6:30pm will not participate in the draw and will be scheduled to perform first.
  4. Any band that misses the draw and has not arrived at the State Theatre by 7pm will be disqualified from BOTB.
  5. On the night of your performance, only the members that performed in your online video will be allowed to perform live. However, if you would like to make a change to your lineup for your performance, that change is subject to approval by The State Theatre and must be made at a minimum of 24 hours PRIOR to your performance or you are subject to immediate disqualification. This rule is intended to keep the event fair and free from bands stacking the deck in their favor with guest performers or becoming a 15-piece band on show night to garner more votes.
  6. You can bring one (1) roadie and one (1) guitar or drum tech. Otherwise, there is NO guest list. Attendees may purchase a ticket and sit inside the theatre.
  7. Other than actual performers, there is NO ONE permitted in the backstage green room area.
  8. Additionally, band hospitality is strictly for band members only.
  9. All bands must use the State Theatre sound and light engineers. No exceptions.

EQUIPMENT:

  1. In an effort to streamline the event, The State Theatre will provide an on-stage drum kit (5 piece drum kit, 3 cymbal stands, hi-hat stand, snare drum (snare stand provided) and single bass drum pedal). Drummers may bring their own snare drum and double bass pedal if needed. However, use of the provided drum kit is mandatory.
  2. Amplifiers, microphones, mic stands, monitors, a PA, as well as a sound and lighting engineer will also be provided.
  3. Bands will be responsible for providing their own instruments and instrument cables as well as any other equipment necessary for performance (not listed above).
  4. All technical needs of a band’s performance must be expressly communicated by the band to The State Theatre in advance of the event.
  5. Bands are responsible for bringing their instruments on and off the stage in a timely manner.
  6. Band members are responsible for the security of their personal equipment.
  7. Anyone caught stealing, tampering with or removing any of the BOTB gear or equipment will be disqualified and subject to prosecution.

MARKETING & PROMOTION:

  1. Bands are encouraged to promote the event via all social media channels.
  2. Flyers promoting the event will be printed and distributed around town and online.
  3. All bands agree to have their name, voice and/or likeness used in any advertising or broadcasting material in an effort to promote the BOTB event,

PRIZES:

  • $2500 Grand Prize will be awarded based on a panel of judges at the live show on March 13, 2022.
  • $1500 Audience Choice Award will be awarded based on in-person voting at the live show on March 13, 2022.
