5th Annual Healing Masculinities through Collective Voices: Teatro Izcalli

Synopsis

Teatro Izcalli is a nationally known Chicana/o comedy troupe based out of San Diego. In existence since 1995, the group has been performing throughout the United States, from as far as New York City to the lights of Las Vegas at various local, state, and national conferences. Their focus, following in the traditions of La Carpa, Teatro Campesino, and Culture Clash, is to present the traditions, challenges, and opportunities related to Chicanas/os. Teatro Izcalli has produced two full-length original plays, Nopal Boy and Juan More Beer (a 5 de Mayo educational comedy), along with numerous actos (sketches) over the years, all of which have received acclaim and recognition. In addition, Teatro Izcalli has received grants from the California Arts Council, San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture, and the San Diego Foundation for Change, to name a few, all of which have allowed the group to work on exciting projects in the community. In 2016, the group was given a California State Resolution by the Honorable State Senator Ricardo Lara for their 20 years of contribution to the arts in California.

Currently, the group receives federal funding to teach theater at four local schools in the San Diego Unified School District, where they collaborate with the San Diego Opera to produce original written works and productions with students. In 2009, Teatro Izcalli published its book “Nopal Boy & Other Actos,” which has been used at major universities, high schools, and middle schools in the country. In 2011, the book received an English Award from the California English Teachers Association for its contribution to literature. In the year 2000, the group was hired by the City of Chula Vista to promote the Census in the Latino community. In 2005, Teatro Izcalli received funds from the First Five Commission, collaborating with the Chicano Federation, to produce an educational staged comedy and video for parents who have children from 0 to 5 years old. Additionally, Teatro Izcalli has taught theater classes to elementary school students in the 6-to-6 school program in the San Ysidro School District, which resulted in the publishing of two children’s multi-media art books, along with the Taco Shop Poets and world-renowned muralist Victor Ochoa.
