Library Foundation Fundraiser Moves to the State Theater to Spotlight Library Programs for Youth and Adults
Tickets on sale now for the September 28 Author Spotlight event featuring special guest, mystery writer Kris Calvin
The Stanislaus Library Foundation’s annual fundraising event has been rechristened Author Spotlight and will feature an appearance by acclaimed author and children’s advocate, Kris Calvin. The event will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 28 at The State Theater in Modesto. Tickets are now on sale.
“The Author Spotlight event raises funds for library programs for children and adults,” said Foundation president, Susan Thomas. This year, part of the money raised will be used to support Financial Literacy programming at all 13 branches of the Stanislaus County Library. “Building financially fit kids benefits us all,” said Thomas.
Ticketholders will meet and hear mystery writer, Kris Calvin, who will speak on the importance of both creativity and advocacy. “For me, creativity and advocacy go hand in hand and are the “twin pillars” that support a full and meaningful life,” said Calvin.
Calvin is the author of several mystery and crime novels including “All That Fall” (2021) and “Under a Broken Sky” (2023). A California native, her stories take place in the greater Sacramento area. Calvin goes well beyond the normal level of research in her writing. For example, she achieved certification in Forensic Psychology to lend the maximum credence to her characters.
In addition to her writing, Calvin is recognized as a child advocate. She previously served as CEO of the American Academy of Pediatrics, California, and has been honored for her leadership in advocacy for children by the California Legislature and Governor’s office. In 2022, she received the American Academy of Pediatrics Child Advocate Award. In Calvin’s books, there are crimes to solve and murderers to catch – these are, after all, mysteries and thrillers – but no harm comes to children.
Among her numerous writing honors, Calvin has received Silver Falchion National Literary Awards for Best First Novel, Best Political Thriller and Best Female PI/Sleuth, joining past awardees that include Sue Grafton, Dean Koontz, and Ann Perry.
Tickets include the program, hearty hors d’oeuvres and wine.
