Synopsis
From PAWEL PAWLIKOWSKI, the director of Ida (2013) and Cold War (2018).
Set in 1949, Fatherland follows Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann and his actress daughter Erika as they embark on a road trip across a Germany in ruins, from US-dominated Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar. Returning home after years of exile in the U.S., Mann finds the nation he knew to be gone, replaced by a country with conflicting ideologies. Erika, who acts as his travel coordinator and translator, strives to pierce his detached persona while quietly struggling with a family tragedy.
