George Orwell's

Tues. April 4

(R-1984) 2 Hrs. (Blu-ray) In English (Drama, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Romance)

The State is joining art film houses across the country in a NATIONAL EVENT DAY screening of the movie 1984 (starring Richard Burton, Suzanna Hamilton and John Hurt, who passed away Jan. 25).  The date April 4 was chosen because it's the day George Orwell's protagonist Winston Smith begins rebelling against his oppressive government by keeping a forbidden diary. Orwell’s novel begins with the sentence "It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen." His portrait of a government that manufactures their own facts, demands total obedience, and demonizes foreign enemies, has never been timelier. We hope you will join us in taking a stand for our most basic values: freedom of speech, respect for our fellow human beings, and the simple truth that there is no such thing as "alternative facts." By doing what we do best, showing a movie, we believe our cinemas can foster community conversation about basic human rights and respect for one an all.

Doors at 6; film at 7 p.m.
Admission: $8
