Marie Curie: The Courage of Knowledge

Fri. 7/28 - Thurs. 8/3

1 Hr. 35 Min. (Digital) In French with English subtitles (Biography, Romance)

This new feature film tells the fascinating story of Madame Curie, a courageous woman, legendary Polish physicist and chemist, and the only two-time Nobel Prize recipient in different categories. An inspiring tale of tenacity and female empowerment, Marie Curie turns out to be surprisingly relevant today. The director’s focus is on Curie’s private life, especially her romantic passion, fearlessness and perseverance. A poignant story shows a beautifully crafted portrait of the visionary and women’s rights champion when she struggles for acceptance in male-dominated academia in turn-of-the-century Paris.

Summer of (Movie) Love, Peace & Understanding
Monterey Pop

Sun. July 30

(Doc. ~ 1967) 1 Hr. 18 Min. (Digital/Restored) In English

The State is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Summer of Love with a four-film series ~ and a fab party ~ that kicks off with the remastered and restored Monterey International Pop Festival. The first festival not only captured a decade’s spirit and ushered in a new era of rock and roll, it featured career-making performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Otis Redding plus the diverse cast included Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas, the Who, the Byrds, Hugh Masekela, and the extraordinary Ravi Shankar. D. A. Pennebaker captured it all, immortalizing moments that have become legend: Pete Townshend destroying his guitar, Jimi Hendrix burning his. Now, 50 years later, we return to a place and time the likes of which have never been seen, or experienced, again: The Summer of Love.  Next films: Valley of The Dolls (R-1967) on Sun. Aug. 6 at 2 p.m.; The Fearless Vampire Killers (G-1967) on Sun. Aug. 13 at 2 p.m.; and a party plus Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (PG-1978) on Fri. Aug. 18 at 6 p.m.
