A Quiet Passion

Fri. 5/19 - Fri. 5/26

(PG-13) 2 Hrs. 6 Min. (Digital) In English (Drama)

Cynthia Nixon delivers a triumphant performance as Emily Dickinson, personifying the wit, intellectual independence and pathos of the poet whose genius only came to be recognized after her death. Acclaimed British director Terence Davies (House of Mirth, The Deep Blue Sea) exquisitely evokes Dickinson’s deep attachment to her close knit family along with the manners, mores and spiritual convictions of her time that she struggled with and transcended in her poetry.

Visioning Series Speaker - Michele Reeves

The DoMo Partnership is proud to kick off a series of visioning events to help property and business owners as well as residents imagine all the possibilities for downtown Modesto. The first event features urban strategist Michele Reeves.

Urban strategist, property owner and developer Michele Reeves, who has worked with dozens of cities to help build a vision for future success will lead a discussion with business and property owners, civic leaders and residents at 7 p.m. May 22 at The State Theatre. The presentation is open to the public; there is no cost to attend. It is the first in a series of community visioning events presented by the Downtown Modesto Partnership. Reeves, who owns Civilis Consultants in Portland, Ore., is an expert on increasing economic vitality by leveraging a city’s existing strengths. Her presentation at The State will focus on how business and property owners can build on downtown’s unique, positive characteristics to drive economic growth. She will touch on how diverse elements such as a mix of tenants, parking, street landscaping, the ability to collaborate and even the hours of operation all influence how customers and residents interact. Reeves’ work has taken her up and down the West Coast, from Vancouver to various cities in California, Washington, Oregon and Nevada. Two years ago, she worked with business leaders and civic officials in Fresno to develop a strategy to improve the retail environment along busy Blackstone Avenue.
